Investigating visual analogies for visual insight problems

چکیده
Much research has focused on the impact of analogies in insight problem solving, but less work has investigated how the visual analogies for insight are actually constructed. Thus, it appears that in the search for their facilitative impact on the incubation effect, the understanding of what makes good visual analogies has somehow been lost. This paper presents preliminary work of constructing a set of 6 visual analogies and evaluating their impact on solving the visual problem of eight coins. Findings suggest that in visual analogies, the insight cues are the most beneficial ones, especially when integrated, and that depth cues are important surface aspects in facilitating incubation effect. Our findings support the facilitative cue theory and replicate previous outcomes on the importance of impasse experience as a prerequisite for analogical transfer.

Relationship between Visual Impairments and Motor Problems Children 3-6 Age with Low Birth Weight
Abstract Birth weight is one of the most important indicators of neonatal health in any society and is considered as the best tool to measure the outcome of pregnancy and the most important factor in determining the incidence of disease or death of the infant. The purpose of this study was to investigating relationship between visual impairments and motor problems in children 3-6 age with ve...
متن کاملA Cognitive Model of Visual Analogical Problem-Solving Transfer
Complex problem solving typically involves the generation of a procedure consisting of an ordered sequence of steps. Analogical reasoning is one strategy for solving complex problems, and visual reasoning is another. Visual analogies pertain to analogies based only on visual knowledge. In this paper, we describe the use of Galatea, a computational model of visual analogies in problem solving, t...
متن کاملMethods for investigating the neural components of insight.
The authors describe how they have used visual-hemifield and event-related neuroimaging approaches to study their theory specifying some of the neural components of insight. A set of problems developed by the authors, and the use of solvers' self reports of insight, are presented to argue that advances in our understanding of insight are being unnecessarily stifled by over reliance on tradition...
متن کاملA Structure Mapping Model for Solving Geometric Analogy Problems
Evan's 1968 ANALOGY system was the first computer model of analogy. This paper demonstrates that structure-mapping, when combined with high-level visual processing and qualitative representations, can do the same kinds of problems with hand-drawn sketched inputs. Importantly, the bulk of the computations are not particular to the model of this task but are general purpose: we sketch the problem...
متن کاملInvestigating the Impact of Dual Task Condition and Visual Manipulation on Healthy Young Old During Non-Dominant Leg Stance
Objectives: The dominant leg has always received special attention in public health practices and even in professional clinical evaluation and interventions. The aim of this research study was to methodically examine the substrate balance character of the non-dominant leg under dual task conditions and visual deprivation to increase the baseline insight for maintaining body balance and for fall...
